Problems With An Online Driving Course

An online driving course is much like any other online education.  There is not a lot of hands-on practice, but there is a lot of theory and explaining of why things must be or at least why they should be the way they are.  The most common courses are often business and technology-related.  Online driving classes, however, are recent offerings, and do not fulfill the requirements of driver’s education.  Most classroom-based driver’s education classes offer testing in a live car.  However, this cannot be done in an online driving course, making it a theory course opposed to a practical course.

Online education has gained popularity because of the flexibility in scheduling and the higher value of the education.  The traditional education system requires classes to be attended at the set schedule of the school.  This does not give much flexibility to those who have special needs, such as job requirements or family responsibilities.  Traditional education also has limited class sizes, making it necessary to tell a student that he or she must wait to attend a class.  Due to the nature of online classes, a class can be any size, depending on the needs of the students, and a student will rarely be turned away from an online driving course.  This is invaluable for completing an education on time and with higher efficiency.  It is this flexibility and efficiency that draws most students to online colleges and universities.

Traditional schools do have a serious advantage over any online driving course, however.  Traditional schools are able to offer a hands-on approach to education.  This means that the traditional schools are able to allow the student to drive an automobile with the instruction of the professor and gain practice and confidence behind the wheel.  Due to the distance of the professor and the sheer nature of any internet-based learning environment, this hands-on technique is simply not available to the online student.  There is plenty of theory that is discussed in the online driving course though, allowing for a student who already has a driving history to learn new technique or re-familiarize with forgotten techniques.

An online driving course also has problems with testing.  Most finals in traditional schools for driving courses involve driving the car efficiently and smoothly, without breaking driving laws.  This form of testing has already been discussed as impossible for the online student.  Instead, the final for the online driving course is yet another test on theory and law.  This is very important, but it is not practical since it is not theory that is important in driving, but rather practice, especially when it comes time to earn a license.

While many online courses are comparable to those offered in the traditional educational system, those that require a hands-on approach, like an online driving course, are often tarnished by the online system.  This is simply due to the nature of the online educational system and the need for hands-on training that simply cannot be offered by distance learning programs.
